Children Who Don't Read Grow Up Bad
The author, Bianca Schulze, writesThe Children’s Book Review. She is a reader, reviewer, mother, and children’s book lover. Combined with her love of books and experience as a children’s bookseller, Bianca’s goal is very similar to my own here at Imagination Soup, to share her passion to help grow readers. I started this post by saying I felt sorry for the parents of children who don't read, and so I do. The Snooki article focusses on her relationship with her father, an auto-salvage manager from Marlborough, New York. Do I feel sorry for him for having a daughter like Snooki? It is almost tautological to observe that being a reader sets a child up for academic success, since so much of school is reading. And that means-to-an-end argument in support of reading says nothing of the many joys it can bring. But even though plenty of people simply don’t enjoy reading , it’s a vital skill. In great middle-grade novels, children are the protagonists; they solve problems, have adventures unmediated by adults and are generally the stars of their own shows. That’s why orphans are so common in classic children’s literature. Even in contemporary middle-grade fiction, parents seem to die or be otherwise unavailable at an improbable rate, forcing child characters to bravely confront challenges.
